Yael Yuzon of Spongecola translates hit single “Jeepney” on the spot — after being told he can’t sing in Tagalog

April 19th, 2017

Spongecola frontman Yael Yuzon recently had a mall gig where he performed one of his band’s biggest hits, Jeepney, in English.

The reason?

According to a source, mall management allegedly prohibited Yael Yuzon from performing Tagalog songs in that part of the mall because it was their premium section, where high-end brands and shops are located.

Wow. Just… wow.

Props to you, Mr. Yuzon for keeping it classy. You did a bang up job translating on the spot!

Maybe the mall can come forward and explain their policy?

UPDATE: SM Supermalls released an official statement regarding this matter:

We would like to clarify the information being circulated online regarding performances that happen in our malls.

We would like to reiterate that we promote all international and local entertainment acts in all our mall event areas nationwide. Moreover, we have been a proud supporter of the Filipino Talent as we promote many celebrity and movie mall tours as week long celebrations of Independence Day and Linggo ng Wika.

We are now looking into this matter carefully and will reach out to the concerned party. We apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have caused at this time.
