Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson to star in a holiday action-comedy film

Captain America actor Chris Evans is teaming up with Jumanji star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Red One, an upcoming holiday action-comedy film developed by Amazon Studios.

As first reported by Deadline, Red One is an original story by Hiram Garcia, the producer and president of production at Seven Bucks Productions. The holiday film is described as a “globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy” with the hopes to re-imagine a new universe within the holiday genre.

American filmmaker Jake Kasdan, who is known for directing Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, is set to direct the holiday film, with Chris Morgan writing the script. The two had previously collaborated on Fast and Furious presents: Hobbs and Shaw, The Fate of the Furious, Furious 7, Fast & Furious 6, and Fast Five.

Kasdan will also produce Red One through his company The Detective Agency, alongside Melvin Mar and co-producer Sky Salem. Morgan will also produce through Chris Morgan Productions, with Johnson, Hiram and Dany Garcia producing on behalf of Seven Bucks Production.

Johnson had previously worked with Kasdan for Jumanji and its sequel. Johnson and Evans also appeared together in the 2021 comedy film Free Guy, but this project is the first film where the two stars will topline together.

Evans had recently appeared in Adam McKay’s film Don’t Look Up, and in Mark Bomback’s Defending Jacob. He will next star in the Russ brothers’ film The Gray Man, and Pixar’s origin story Lightyear as the voice of Buzz Lightyear.

Johnson, on the other hand, had starred alongside Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds in Red Notice, one of the biggest movies in 2021. He also has numerous projects in line this year, including DC League of Super Pets, The King, the reboot of Big Trouble in Little China, and the DC film Black Adam.

On December 31, Hiram first teased about Red One in an interview with Collider where he shared that the film’s tone is similar to the Guardians of the Galaxy. “What I can tell you is that it is a very big Christmas movie. We’ve always wanted to do a Christmas movie, but we didn’t want to do the typical Christmas movies that tend to go a little bit broader, I think, in tone,” said Hiram.

He also added, “We had been looking for something that matched, the tone and tenor of DJ and what DJ brings to the table, so was able to come up with a really fun Christmas idea, but in tone it’s much more of a Hobbs & Shaw, more of Guardians of the Galaxy in tone and vibe because you’re dealing with crazy mythological elements, turning a lot of tropes we know about the holidays on their head, but also really big action and globe-trotting.”

Red One will begin production this year and is expected to drop in the holiday season of 2023. As of writing, the plot details and other cast members are yet to be announced.
