K-Pop blog Allkpop under fire for racist remarks on Southeast Asian fans

K-Pop and BLACKPINK stan Twitter is currently buzzing with Tweets, thanks to Allkpop’s article on BLACKPINK Lisa’s extreme Southeast Asian fans being criticized for “terrorizing” the other BLACKPINK members’ Instagram accounts.

Although the article does show how some of Lisa’s fans are commenting negative and offensive things on the other members’ social media, the editors of Allkpop failed to feature factual information. Instead, the blog site presented comments that attacked Lisa’s Southeast Asian fans. This made Southeast Asian fans angry, demanding an apology from Allkpop for their racism and discrimination towards them.

One concerned fan reached out to one of the co-founders of Allkpop about the issue, who did not acknowledge the fault in their article and reasoned out that they had come across the topic as one of Nate Pann’s trending topics with over 100,000 views. This caused an outrage on Twitter, with the hashtags “Allkpopracist” and “APOLOGIZE TO SEA” currently trending on the social media platform.

As of writing, there hasn’t been any statement coming from Allkpop regarding the issue.

The article was written with the intent of exposing the Thai K-Pop idol’s extreme fans but failed to recognize the huge number of racist remarks and hate comments that Lisa is receiving on her social media as well. Lisa has been dealing and receiving racist comments since the beginning of her career, just because she hails from Thailand, a country from Southeast Asia.

It’s disappointing to see people hate on someone just for their race, because it’s such an outdated way of thinking and a disrespect to a person’s dignity and identity. It’s even more distressing to describe and generalize a group of people in a negative and harmful light.

They can all advocate for #StopAsianHate, but when it comes to their fellow Asians, they perpetrate the same thing.

A person’s worth should not be equated to their race. We’re 7 months into 2021, when will people ever realize that racism should never be tolerated anymore? When will people learn to respect others and to keep their mouths shut when they have nothing good to say?
