‘Evil Dead Rise’ director unveils start of filming in New Zealand

Filmmaker Lee Cronin officially confirmed on Twitter the start of filming on the next Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise, which is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2022.

Evil Dead Rise production has finally kicked off in New Zealand yesterday, June 7, as director Lee Cronin tweeted “Day 1. #EvilDeadRise.”

The movie stars Australian actresses Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as the new female leads of the long-running horror franchise.

Evil Dead Rise moves the action out of the woods and into the city, in which it is expected to depict a modern-day urban horror film.

The upcoming fifth installment to the Evil Dead franchise focuses on the twisted tale of the two estranged sisters, whose reunion is interrupted by a wave of supernatural horrors.

The upcoming film, Evil Dead Rise, wouldn’t have any ties to the previous Evil Dead movies.

“The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at nine years old,” Cronin previously said in a statement

“I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation,” he added.

The public has also expressed their anticipation to the said movie, as well as requested that the Evil Dead Rise would be released in other streaming services.

New Line Cinema has boarded the Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert-produced movie. Executive producers are Raimi, Campbell, Tapert, Romel Adam, John Keville, and Macdara Kelleher.

The project is written and directed by Lee Cronin, who also directed The Hole In The Ground horror film.

The Evil Dead franchise began with the 1981’s The Evil Dead, then was followed by two sequels — 1987’s Evil Dead II and 1993’s Army of Darkness. The fourth installment, 2013’s Evil Dead, was a soft reboot of the first film.
