Gin Rum and Truth gives us the grunge we need with ‘I Got The Flu’ featuring Trish Reyes

Just before the cold of the –Ber months starts sweeping in, local grunge outfit Gin Rum and Truth (GRT), together with homegrown metal icon Trish Reyes, released their latest collaboration ‘I Got The Flu’. It is the band’s 3rdrelease under Warner Music Philippines, available on Spotify, YouTube, and all digital platforms. The single sounds like a classic rock tune our titos and (maybe) titas would have loved playing on repeat back in the day. You can feel the nostalgic vibe of the song, connecting to its grunge roots while making you groove. It has its own timeless feel, which can very easily get stuck in the heads of many once listened to.

Once you hit play, you hear the band’s notable heavy riffs—making the listener know that they’re in for a ride. Then comes the soulful voice of Trish, leading the first verse. Clearly different from usual metal vocals: no heaviness, no screams, and no growls—just passionate, soulful singing from the ‘Metal Barbie’. She continues ‘til the first quarter of the track, blessing us with her solo on the first minutes. Then she duets with GRT’s main vocals, Yok Tano, on the next verse, and they surprisingly complement each other so well. We have here Yok’s crunchy sound and Trish’s smooth tunes mixed masterfully well leaving a lingering enticement to the listener.

The repeated line “You got me thinking ‘bout / What we are” was an awesome build-up to the impending guitar solo, and the song never lapsed, always keeping the track’s passionate energy strong. The song’s guitar solo itself literally sounds like your inner desires making it out of your system, keeping the song’s actual concept regarding desire and yearning true to itself. It was the climax of the whole track, giving way to its mic-drop ending.

Overall, ‘I Got The Flu’ deserves a spot in the charts with its courage to take on a classic type of tune and mixing it with contemporary lyrics and arrangements, making it an LSS-worthy track for all generations. Trish Reyes did so good taking a quick detour from her metal roots, and endorsed this style well with the song.

Music video out now

Gin Rum and Truth just released the music video for ‘I Got The Flu’ last November 23, 2020, and it compliments the song greatly. With the creative direction of the music video following a more morbid, grittier take on what it means to truly desire for something, GRT and Trish Reyes’ collaboration on the song arms the MV with a soulful, heavy, and spirited punch.

The music video, produced by Hiraya Film Production,is an entertaining watch of its own, as it follows two individuals partaking in the usual city night life. Starring Keith Punk and Mikaela Foronda, the MV followsa seemingly simple (and also nostalgic, since the pandemic took the city night life away) narrative, before ittakes a dramatic turn when the “Flu” or “Fever” is actually bloodlust. As exciting as it sounds, you can only ever truly appreciate it if you watch it for yourself!
