Ateneo Mathematics Society to launch MathCon 2020 in October

In keeping with its mission to cultivate deep awareness and appreciation of Mathematics, the Ateneo Mathematics Society (AMS) will hold the annual Mathematics Convention (MathCon) from October 5 to 10, 2020 and from November 23 to 28, 2020.  MathCon 2020: Numbers Demystified, as this year’s event is entitled, will be conducted fully online via Facebook Live.

At the center of MathCon 2020 will be the esteemed speakers who have been invited by the AMS to shed light on how Math can be applied in different areas of expertise including Psychology, Business, and Philippine Arts among others. There will also be an event website where relevant activities, talk highlights, and contributions such as student essays will be featured.

The first week of the convention will be graced by the presence of Mr. John Luis Lagdameo who will discuss startup businesses, Ms. Christine Joy Okubo who will share about Data Science, Mr. Joshua Uyheng who will present about disinformation, and Dr. Queena Lee-Chua who will expound on Psychology. In the second week, the distinguished guests will be Dr. Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas for her work in the field of Philippine Arts, Dr. Reinabelle Reyes for her expertise in Data Science and Astrophysics, and Mr. Kenneth Isaiah Ibasco Abante for his research in Epidemiology.

Despite the limitations imposed upon the event by the current global situation, the organizing team behind MathCon 2020 is determined to maximize the new online platform to expand the reach of the project and to further the advocacies of the AMS as a whole.

“I believe Math should be a challenge to the mind rather than something to fear,” one of the MathCon 2020 project heads, Cristina Bianca Mallari says. “One way of achieving this is bringing the discipline closer to the different fields people are already familiar with. I believe this is what lies at the core of MathCon.”

For more details, visit the MathCon 2020 website, bit.ly/NumbersDemystified, which will be accessible one week before the event, or the Facebook page www.facebook.com/MathCon2020.
