Is retirement that boring? Well, it looks like it does, take some hints from Hayao Miyazaki.
The celebrated Japanese filmmaker and Studio Ghibli co-founder, known for being the mind behind the popular films “My Neighbor Totoro (1988),“Princess Mononoke” (1997), “Spirited Away” (2001), “Howl’s Moving Castle” (2004), and “The Wind Rises” (2013), is once again stepping out of his retirement to create one last movie.
Miyazaki himself confirmed this news in an interview with the New York Times, saying that he will be making one last film titled, “How Do You Live?”, named after the 1937 novel authored by Yoshino Genzaburo. According to Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki, the film is said to be a fantasy on a grand scale”.
Hayao Miyazaki originally announced his retirement from the film industry back in 2013, but was later on found out to have created a short film with his son, Goro Miyazaki, for the Ghibli Museum titled, “Earwig and the Witch”. Then in 2018, he had announced that he would be once again retiring.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case now, as the renowned filmmaker of iconic animated classics is again stepping out of his retirement. When asked about the reason why he was coming out of retirement to make another film, the Japanese filmmaker simply just said, “Because I want to.”
Yes, king behavior.
Miyazaki was also asked on how he was to answer the question “How Do You Live?”, as that is the title of his next film. He said, “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer.”
Truly, Hayao Miyazaki’s works will remain to be an iconic part of each of our childhoods. With his films beaming with “coming-of-age” stories, mixed with environmentalism, pacifism, feminism, love, and family, Miyazaki’s narratives contain messages that will speak to us no matter what our age is.
On another note, can Hayao Miyazaki give us that productivity boost that we all need? Because wow can I get on what he’s on? I need that boost to keep on going.
