Despite advances in modern filmmaking, we wonât be seeing Chadwick Boseman reprise his role as Black Panther on the big screen.
Victoria Alonzo, Marvel Studios Executive Vice President, says that there are no plans to digitally recreate the late Chadwick Boseman for Black Panther 2.
While modern technology hypothetically enables the industry to recreate late performers and insert them into movies, both filmmakers and fans alike have historically cringed when presented with a fully CGI version of a once-living star. Alonzo assured Marvel fans last week, through an Argentine newspaper, that Boseman will not be digitally recreated with CGI technology.
âThereâs only one Chadwick, and heâs no longer with us. Sadly, our king has died in real life, not only in fiction, and weâre taking a little time to see how we continue the story and how to honor this chapter of what has unexpectedly happened to us, so painful and terrible to be honest. Chadwick wasnât only a wonderful human being, every day of the five years we spent together, but also, I believe, that what he did as a character elevated us as a company, and has left his moment in history,â Alonzo said.
While Boseman made a name for himself with biopics like 42 and Get On Up, heâll always be remembered for being a trailblazer in the superhero world as Black Panther. Beginning with 2016âs Captain America: Civil War, Boseman ruled as King TâChalla and Black Panther for four movies.
The planned sequel wouldâve seen Boseman return as The Black Panther before his tragic passing in August this year. The actor had been secretly battling colon cancer since 2016 while simultaneously starring in seven films, including the physically-demanding Black Panther.
The actorâs untimely death will certainly be addressed in the not-yet-titled Black Panther II. The upcoming sequel is directed by Ryan Coogler and is currently scheduled to be released on May 22.
