Bawal Clan and Owfuck’s Ligtas reminds to keep safe amid the pandemic

After revealing societal “sharks” in ‘Pating sa Kadiliman,’ the difficulties of this cold world with ‘Ligaw,’ and a story of temptation and motivation through ‘Heist,’ Bawal Clan and Owfuck now share with us their highly anticipated new album. Ligtas is now available on various streaming platforms.

“Astig nga, di naman pinagplanuhan talaga na gumawa ng mixtape dapat one track lang, kaso nagkatuwaan at napagusapan gumawa [na] ng mixtape (It’s cool because we didn’t plan on making a mixtape. It’s supposed to be just one track. But we had fun and ended up making one anyway),” says Astro from Owfuck.

The album is produced by Pope Fiction and Yung Bawal, together known as Hidden Leaf Soundsystem. Yung Bawal shares how they conceptualized the beats through getting ideas from everyone involved in the project and asking each other what’s on everyone’s current playlist. Pope Fiction also shares, “The process of creating the beats was organic. Yung Bawal and I would sit down usually just looking for loops, keeping in mind the artists individual styles so we can properly showcase their skills. Sometimes, we would have one of them in the studio while we were making the beats and they would immediately pick from there.”

“Safe Lang”

Coming from the idea of being “safe lang” (meaning, being okay and put together) in various situations, Ligtas conveys a message as collaborative as its creation process: a collection of the two groups’ ideas, thoughts, and opinions on how to navigate through today’s world and throughout one’s life without losing one’s sanity and identity.

“The whole vibe of the project is about collaborating and working together towards a common goal, overcoming whatever obstacles you come across and just getting that bag,” explains Lex Luthoor from Bawal Clan.

“We really just bounced off each other’s energy and kept building as much as we wanted to. The album is a reflection of both camps’ energies combined. Each artist and producer involved approached this from a different angle but still meshed seamlessly. Everyone tossed in a flavor of their own to create an ear appetizing platter, served with the perfect blend of bars, beats, and grit,” adds Rjay Ty, also from Bawal Clan. “The album is meant to be played, enjoyed, digested and looped. Hopefully, it helps you with whatever it is that you’re going through.”

Singles Previously Released

For the past few weeks, each Friday signaled the debut of a new track dropped prior to the release of the new collaborative album.

‘Pating Sa Kadiliman,’ released on 17 April 2020, talks about the ominous presence of unknown threats around us: predators and menaces — sharks — that present themselves in different ways, shapes and forms. ‘Ligaw’ was released last 24 April 2020 and highlights how problems do not just make us stronger but more just, how music knows no class or status, and how patience and hardwork is rewarded by strength and wisdom. Lastly, ‘Heist’ was released last 1 May 2020 and paints a picture that reflects the title itself: a heist that was planned with strong motivations and executed with a little help of something to take the nervous edge off.

All tracks were recently featured on Spotify’s New Music Fridays and Apple Music’s Local & Regional Releases.
