DLSU ENGLICOM to usher in the Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year, sometimes known as the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, is one of the paramount occasions in the Chinese community. Its famous colorful celebration is awaited by many all over the world, most especially countries with relatively large Chinese communities. One might even say that it is one of the biggest events to look forward to as people prepare to not only join in the revelry, but also to usher in the new Zodiac of the year and all it brings with it, both the good and the bad.

For over 55 years, ENGLICOM, the premiere Filipino-Chinese socio-civic organization of De La Salle University (DLSU) – Manila, has been upholding and promoting the Chinese culture within the Lasallian community. As one of the organization’s main goals is to bridge the gap between the members of both the Filipino and the Chinese-Filipino communities, the organization strives to create activities that are geared towards the appreciation, integration and understanding of the Chinese culture, while still remaining inclusive to everyone as much as possible. As the campus happens to have quite an extensive amount of Chinese-Filipino students, ENGLICOM makes it a point to celebrate important events. One of those events is, of course, Chinese New Year, which is considered as the biggest university wide-event arranged by the organization.

Spearheaded by this year’s ENGLICOM Chinese New Year Central Committee (CENCOMM), the organization shall transform the home of the green and white to be painted instead with the festive colors of red and gold on February 3 to 6, 2020 at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall Grounds. As the celebration shall welcome the Year of the Rat, this weeklong event will involve having numerous game booths stationed around the venue with rat-themed and inspired mini games. In addition, there will be other fun activities that students may choose to partake in such as the tikoy and noodle eating contests, and will also be able to enjoy the traditional lion and dragon dance, and other performances by homegrown Lasallian talents.

As this event is practically the most significant for the organization as it has always been done on such a large scale, the CENCOMM has been making the necessary preparations as early as the holiday break last December 2019. CENCOMM members were divided into six subcommittees namely Events, Logistics, Marketing, Public Relations, Creatives and Productions. Each committee plays an important role in bringing this event together. Some of the preparations for the event include the conceptualization of the mini games and program flow, the reservation of the needed equipment, decorating of the campus and creation of props, creation of publicity materials, and the contacting of possible event sponsors. Without everyone’s efforts, the event would not have been made possible. It is truly thanks to them that the Lasallian community is able to enjoy such a celebrated tradition.

As the celebration draws near, ENGLICOM hopes that they will be able to provide a fun and enjoyable time while also creating an avenue to further unite everyone as one Lasallian community. After all, what better way to experience one’s culture than a grand festival such as this? Thus, the CENCOMM shall continue to diligently work towards the success of this auspicious event.
