Life lessons viewers can learn from ‘My Prettiest Moments’

Warning: This article may contain spoilers

My Prettiest Moments is a drama movie that was aired back in 2012 by a South Korea-based television channel. The film tells the story of Lee Shin-ae (Jeon Ye-Seo), a married woman suffering from terminal cancer. While living with her husband Kim Ui-soo (Song Young-kyu) and their son DaeWung, Shin-ae is urged to go to the hospital to get further medical treatment for her condition. And it’s during her stay there that she meets Yoon Jung-hyuk (Lee Jong-suk), the guardian and boyfriend of the woman staying in the ward next to Shin-ae’s. Eventually, the two fall in love with each other despite their respective relationships.

In case you haven’t watched this Korean drama yet, here are some of the life lessons we can learn in the movie:

It emphasizes a woman’s strength and love for family

The movie highlights the love of a family. Even though Shin-ae lived her whole life chronically ill, Ui-Soo married her and together, they built their own family. Taking on the role of father and husband, Ui-Soo takes responsibility in his household–even caring for his wife amidst her illness and further medications. However, after years of fighting cancer, Shin-ae is exhausted and considers to stop her medication. It is at this moment that she starts taking a stand and making her own life decisions.

Shin-ae’s situation is realisitc, emotional, and something that viewers can relate to. And Shin-ae’s character shows us that behind a damaged facade is a strong and loving woman. It’s the ideal scenario to be played out in romantic dramas and it’s one that would keep the audience’s attention until the end.

The reality of betrayal in relationships

The film is a fast-paced story that presents the characters’ feelings towards romantic relationships. From passionate gestures to intense intimate moments, both Jeon Ye-Seo and Lee Jong-suk portrayed their roles effortlessly.

Shin-ae’s complicated persona, for instance, lets viewers understand the sentiment that sometimes, love isn’t enough when you’re in a relationship. Despite the efforts of her husband, she still cheated for the reason that Jung-hyuk fulfilled everything her heart desires in a short period of time. This story may bring back bad memories for some couples but it’s something that can remind us that good still awaits us.
