Double amputee, 9, set to walk in New York Fashion Week

A 9-year-old girl will be making history as the first double amputee child to walk in an official show in New York Fashion Week.

Daisy-May Demetre, from Birmingham, United Kingdom, is set to walk for the fashion brand Lulu et Gigi Couture, as per BBC yesterday, Aug. 28.

Daisy was born with fibular hemimelia, a condition where part or all of the fibular bone in the leg is missing.

This condition led to having both her legs amputated. She now has prosthetic legs that help her walk and move around.

Daisy was selected to represent the brand at the fashion show after its founder, Eni Hegedus-Buiron, saw her modeling in London.

According to the report, when the fashion designer was asked if it was fine to have an amputee walk in her show, she was surprised.

“For me, a child is a child and thus is beautiful and perfect,” Buiron was quoted as saying. “So of course I said yes.”

Modeling is nothing new to Daisy, as she previously walked for the said brand in the recent London Kids’ Fashion Week. She also collaborated with other big brands such as Nike.

Alex Demetre, Daisy’s father, says that despute her daughter’s success as a model, it does not define her.

“It is just a part of what does… she just does Daisy,” he said in the report. “It is the way she goes about life with a smile on her face.”

Mr. Demetre stressed that Daisy’s condition does not deter her, and that she wants to “lead the way” for other amputees.

Daisy will be walking on the runway during the New York Fashion Week on Sept. 8, as per report. The fashion event  will be held from Sept. 6 to 14 in New York City.  Ryan Arcadio  /ra
