‘Looking Beyond Ethereum’ meetup spotlights potential of Smart Contracts Platforms

On May 4th, Asia Blockchain Review (ABR), BlockDevs Asia, and Ground X jointly hosted the “Smart Contract Platforms Today: Looking Beyond Ethereum” meetup event in Makati, the Philippines, where developers, investors, and those interested in smart contracts gathered to network and discuss the latest movements in the industry.

Many blockchain developers are familiar with Ethereum as a platform for applications. At the event, Caspar Oostendorp, founder and CTO of Oost&Voort Inc., a provider of blockchain and cloud software development, shared his opinions on how to fully utilize Ethereum.

“Ethereum is the most decentralized and most adopted smart contract platform. Though it was not built for high throughput dApps, it’s perfect for ensuring immutability across the broadest distribution of full nodes,” Oostendorp said.

He noted that governments and organizations are using Ethereum to carry out many projects, such as digital ID registration in Switzerland, the 2020 blockchain-powered city in Dubai, and the IrisGuard, which uses the iris profiles of refugees as identifiers for the World Food Programme.

Meanwhile, Amadeo Brands, co-founder and CTO of EOI Digital, introduced the IOST, an enterprise-level blockchain system. According to Brands, IOST has a higher throughput compared to Ethereum, is more developer friendly, and provides a faster virtual machine.

KiJun Sung, Senior Manager of Ground X, explained that Klaytn is an enterprise-grade, service-centric platform that combines the best features of both public and private blockchains via an efficient ‘hybrid’ design that aims to provide the best experience to developers and users.

He also invited developers to take part in the Klaytn hackathon, which is ongoing until the end of May. Minjee Kim, Manager at Ground X, highlighted a use case of the Klaytn platform in disaster relief, which often involves overlapping roles and responsibilities among relief organizations as well as fragmented data.

Klaytn can help solve these problems with a blockchain solution that is traceable and immutable while offering co-ownership of the decentralized ledger to several parties involved in relief operations.

The event was sponsored by Ground X and co-organized by ABR and BlockDevs. About Asia Blockchain Review Asia Blockchain Review is the largest Asian initiative for media and community building for blockchain technology, aiming to connect all blockchain enthusiasts at the regional scale and facilitate the technological foundation of blockchain through various group discussions, technical workshops, conferences, and consulting programs. The goal of ABR is to cultivate and encourage a collaborative community for our members to gather, share experiences and endeavors in the blockchain space, and brainstorm the potential uses of blockchain technology.
