UP fraternity hosts Southeast Asia’s longest-running Debate Tournament

The UP Pi Sigma Fraternity continues its commitment to promote the Twin principles of Paglingkuran ang Sambayanan and Paragon of Scholarship through various socio-political and cause-oriented endeavors. One of which is its flagship project, the 31st Annual UP Pi Sigma Fraternity Open Debate Tournament.

Catering to an audience of more than a thousand College and High School students, eight teams representing the top universities in our country are set to compete for a cash prize of up to 30,000 PHP. These participants shall present well-balanced arguments following a modified Oregon-Oxford format.  Debate matches will be held within UP Diliman on September 21 (Elimination Rounds), September 27 (Semi-Final Rounds), and October 5 (Grand Finals).

The tournament celebrated a milestone for reaching its 30th installment last year. Pressing national issues have been discussed such as the Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law and the imposition of Martial Law in Mindanao. Meanwhile, the participating teams for this upcoming tournament will tackle topics as controversial as the possible shift of our government system to Federalism and the implementation of the executive order against illegal Contractualization.

In 1988, UP Law professors Atty. Crisostomo Uribe and Atty. Dan Calica founded the UP Pi Sigma Fraternity Open Debate Tournament. It was conceived as a platform to raise the social awareness and encourage them critical thinking among the Filipino youth. Three decades has passed, but still the UP Pi Sigma Fraternity remains to be the only Greek formation in UP Diliman to annually hold an academic and socially relevant activity.
