Terrible Sons are determined to make ‘transformative and beautiful’ music. Lauren and Matt Barus write and perform songs that have been described as ‘ethereal’ indie alt-folk. They hail from the South Island of New Zealand, a landscape renowned for its natural beauty but also for the seismic violence that broods beneath. Their hometown of Christchurch was severely damaged and altered by earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. This unease and beauty influences their work, lyrically and musically.
“White Ribbon” pays homage to a friend who snuck through cordons and curfews in order to look for his sister who had not returned home after the February earthquakes.
‘Observance of Hermits’ was written as a loose suite about post-earthquake Christchurch, a coming to grips with a instantly altered city. It’s folk music in that it shares the stories of people, unsure of themselves and each other, but at the same time, looking for hope, usually in the little things that are overlooked. The album was produced and engineered by Ben Edwards, who was behind Nadia Reid’s highly acclaimed ‘Preservation’ as well as albums by folk and country luminaries Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding and Tami Neilson.
