Social media platform Facebook recently announced that live videos will now be only stored for 30 days and will be deleted after the said time period.
This is a significant change from the prior policy, which stated that live videos were retained indefinitely unless the user manually removed them.
As part of this transition, the platform will no longer host any live videos that are more than 30 days old. Users will be notified and given ninety days to decide what to do with their previous live footage before videos are removed.
Users have the option to create a new reel out of the videos, download them to their device, or move them to their cloud storage.
In a blog post made by the social media company, they stated that, “Beginning on February 19, any new live broadcast videos can be replayed, downloaded or shared from your Facebook Pages or profiles for 30 days, after which they will automatically be removed from Facebook. Previously these videos were stored indefinitely.”
“These changes will align our storage policies with industry standards and help ensure we are providing the most up-to-date live video experiences for everyone on Facebook,” they added.
To assist users in preserving their previous live videos, the social media network is introducing new downloading tools.
By using the “Download live videos” option in the message they receive about the impending deletion, users can download their previous live recordings in bulk. Alternatively, they can select their associated cloud storage provider, like Dropbox or Google Drive, after selecting the “Transfer live videos” option.
Facebook is leveraging the shift to further promote Reels by pointing out that users can choose to keep some of their favorite moments from their live broadcasts on their page by turning them into Reels.
