Rihanna fuels retirement rumors, hints at shifting priorities on her speech about music journey

Barbadian singer-businesswoman Rihanna has once again ignited speculations about her plans for the future in the music industry, causing fans to wonder about her retirement from recording music.

The hitmaker and beauty mogul made comments during her speech at a Fenty Beauty event in Barbados, her home country, on November 9, according to Page Six.

“Obviously, music was the thing that got the attention, but God had other plans for me,” Rihanna said in her speech.

Her surprising statement at the opening of the new Fenty store seemed to hint at a shift of plans in her priorities.

“And I was able to create in ways that were sincere and genuine and organic and authentic to the things that I loved. So it doesn’t even feel like a job. But when you bring it home…” she added, reminding people that her business ventures are all from the things that she certainly wanted to pursue.

Rihanna then expressed gratitude towards her home country, saying that it is the biggest inspiration for creating her beauty brand.

“Coming back home, where the first place I ever met beauty, acknowledged beauty, was at my home here in Barbados […] You guys have always inspired me. Everything about my brand, Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin, have been inspired by you and this country, my people, my family, my friends, my opps, I love all of you guys,” she said.

The singer-songwriter has been quiet in the music scene for a number of years now, focusing on her business ventures, the Fenty Beauty cosmetics line, and the Savage x Fenty lingerie brand, all the while being a mom to her two sons.

With this, fans had mixed reactions, with some noting the artist’s shift toward becoming a businesswoman.

While Rihanna had promised new music in the succeeding years, her speech in Barbados made fans worry and wonder whether she’s set to step away entirely from the music industry.

Though the Grammy award-winning and chart-topping singer may not be actively creating new music at the moment, her impact on the music industry and her fans is unquestionable.

Rihanna’s last full-length project was her 2016 ‘Anti’ album, which garnered hit-by-hit records like ‘Kiss It Better,’ ‘Work’ featuring Drake, and ‘Love On The Brain.’

She also stunned fans in her performance during the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2023.
