Viral breakdancer Raygun joins artist Tones and I on stage in Melbourne, draws criticism online

Australian breakdancer Rachel “b-girl Raygun” Gunn made a surprise appearance with fellow Australian artists Tones and I’s performance at the Rod Laver Arena on November 9.

Tones and I hyped up the crowd while introducing Olympic hopeful Gunn. The viral Olympian breakdancer swayed the stage with her breaks dancing skills throughout her performance.

The singer-songwriter headlined her concert with ‘Dance With Me,’ the fourth single from her album ‘Beautifully Ordinary, released in August of this year.

Following Gunn’s appearance, Tones and I shared a video of their encounter and thanked the breakdancer for sharing the stage with her.

“Raygun the most beautiful kindest full of life human I have met. It was an honour to celebrate you last night. Thank you for sharing the stage with me and bringing smiles to so many faces. You always have a friend in me. Tones,” she said on her Instagram post.

Social media users, however, expressed their distaste for the breakdancer’s performance.

“I can’t believe she thought those spastic moves, were good enough for the Olympics,” one Facebook commenter said.

Another Facebook comment said, “That so called break dancing she does, is more like a spastic dance throwing a tantr[u]m.”

“How ridiculous. Can see no improvement. Stop giving this person airtime,” a third commenter said.

Raygun became viral, causing her shot to fame, in August when she failed to score any points at the Paris Olympics.

The World Dance Sport Federation issued a statement the following month to “provide clarity” as to why the breakdancer had managed to top the latest world ranking of the sport.

The breakdancer also made headlines earlier this month for announcing her retirement in breakdancing.

She then clarified that she would be retiring from competing, not the sport entirely.

“I just didn’t have any control over how people saw me or who I was, […] I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now […] I think the level of scrutiny that’s going to be there, and people will be filming it, and it will go online,” she told local radio station 2DayFM.

Earlier this month, the breaker made headlines once again when reports emerged that she had announced her retirement from the sport.
