Facebook post about drawing styles in editorial cartooning sparks creative discourse

A post online has caught people’s attention online sparking a conversation on drawing styles in editorial cartooning.

Prominent artist Cartoonist ZACH, posted on his page an illustration of Gojo with a “do not” sign that came alongside a message that reads, “When joining editorial competitions, Manga-style drawing is often discouraged.”

This has then ignited a discussion about the styles used in creating editorial cartoons.

Social media users took to the comments to share their thoughts about the message posted by the cartoonist.

One user wrote, “He’s really got a point kasi ito ay Editorial cartoon isama mo na rin iyong Political Cartoon lalo na kapag nilagay sa mga journal news article. (mapanewspaper man at news online). Doon sa paggamit ng Manga-style, hindi talaga siya belong sa editorial, sa totoo lang. Siguro iyong mga veteran editorial cartoonist nalang masasabi sa mga infos. I hope that Filipino manga-style artists will understand and have respect the editorial cartoonist. Moveover, Feel free to comment for information and facts [He’s got a point because this is an Editorial cartoon including also the Political Cartoon most especially when they put it in journal news articles (whether it’s newspaper and news online). Using the Manga-style, it doesn’t belong with the editorial, to be honest. Maybe those veteran cartoonists would say the information. I hope that Filipino manga-style artists will understand and have respect (for) the editorial cartoonist. Moveover, Feel free to comment for information and facts].”

“Because an editorial cartoon uses caricatures to add humor and ridicule to a subject or topic. Kaya [this is why] manga style is discouraged because it simply does not fit the “humorous style” of cartooning,” a second user wrote.

A third user wrote, “May rules naman kasi when it comes sa editorial cartooning. hindi sa lahat ng bagay pwede ipasok ang mga manga style na drawing [There are rules when it comes to editorial cartooning. Manga style drawings can’t be included in everything].”

More social media users shared their thoughts in the comments about the given prompt.

Editorial cartooning is about visual commentary that expresses truth and while there are different styles in drawing, creating a piece with these styles can be incorporated with one another so long as the essence of what a visual commentary should look like and it has an original style regardless of what inspiration one got it from.
