The internet has a lot to say about Carlos Yulo’s family controversy that is overshadowing his win

After Olympian Carlos Yulo won a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics, an unexpected ‘drama’ unfolded.

Unfortunately, the athlete’s victory not only highlighted his talent and skills but also brought attention to his personal life.

Yulo’s mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, recently went viral for her previous controversial posts. Instead of supporting her son, she chose to express her support for Japan.

Her post wrote, “Japan pa din talaga.. lakas. [Still Japan. Strong]”

Filipinos can’t help but stick their noses into the drama, focusing on it instead of celebrating Yulo’s achievement. Many are displeased with his mother’s behavior and have taken to social media to express their disappointment.

One user wrote, “Carlos Yulo’s mom blaming everyone but never herself or taking accountability for being wrong, &how she speaks, gives you an idea of why he cut them off &why it was the best decision he ever made. With someone like her or a family like that, you wouldn’t reach your maximum potential and goals. They will drain the life and passion out of you.”

Another user wrote, “No matter the issue, the fact na nanay ka, how could you publicly criticize and humiliate your son? Diba? I don’t get the logic, kahit pa dinisown mo yan. Nanay ka eh. So di ko talaga gets ang mom ni Carlos Yulo for her unnecessary comments. Parang di nanay kung umasta [No matter the issue, the fact that you’re a mother, how could you publicly criticize and humiliate your son? Right? I don’t get the logic, even though you disowned him. You’re a mother. So I don’t really get the mom of Carlos Yulo for her unnecessary comments. It’s like she’s not acting like a mother].”

Nakakalungkot lang itong drama within the family of Carlos Yulo [It’s very sad this drama within the family of Carlos Yulo]. Much as we don’t wanna say bad things about the mom bur she needs to learn self-restraint. Tapalan ang bibig ng duck tape [Cover the mouth with duct tape]. Focus muna sa laban ng anak [Focus on the child’s fight first]. Support muna [Support first]. Huwag magtapon ng dirty laundry in public [Don’t throw dirty laundry in public],” a third user wrote.

While the feud between mother and son has become the center of attention, many have also pointed out that others should be focusing on celebrating the recent success that the olympian received in his recent stint at the 2024 Paris Olympics as this is overshadowing his achievement.

Angelica Yulo has addressed the accusation against her in an interview, defending herself by stating that although she has her son’s bank passbook, she did not touch his money. She also revealed that one of the roots of their misunderstandings concerns her son’s girlfriend.

Above all, it is crucial to prioritize celebrating Carlos Yulo’s victory rather than dwelling on issues related to his personal life. His remarkable achievement at the 2024 Paris Olympics should be the focal point of our admiration and support.

But then, this situation sheds light on a lingering toxic trait within Filipino culture: the tendency for some mothers to exert control over their children’s lives, publicly airing grievances, and often refusing to acknowledge their own mistakes. This situation bears resemblance to what happened with Sarah Geronimo, Jake Zyrus, and H2wo, who also faced conflicts with their mothers over their personal decisions as adults.

While parents dedicate time and effort to guide their children toward success, it is essential to recognize that they should not oblige or force their children to give anything in return. True support and love should be unconditional, allowing individuals to celebrate their achievements without the burden of familial expectations.
