The film is based on a manga by Fumiyo Kono called To All The Corners Of The World (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni). It depicts the story of Suzu Urano, a newlywed who had to move to Kure City to begin a new life with her husband. Director Sunao Katabuchi describes her as someone with great imagination and a talent for drawing. She illustrates a woman who is always smiling despite the shortages and hardships experienced during the war.

It also bagged the Japanese Movie Award of Excellence and the Noburou Oofuji Award at the 71st Mainichi Film Awards.
