For the third straight year, the Philippines has remained at the top of the list of countries with the biggest interest in Web3 gaming, according to a report by independent cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko.
The sustained interest among Filipinos could be attributed to a wide range of factors, but one possible aspect, according to Yield Guild Games (YGG), is the steep learning curve of crypto and Web3 gaming. However, YGG explained that the Filipinos’ strong sense of community plays a huge role in keeping the interest alive.
YGG, the world’s first and biggest Web3 gaming guild, added that this ‘bayanihan’-like manner of helping each other in the Filipino gaming community, explaining complex concepts and sharing best practices, could be traced back from the internet cafe culture that boomed during the early 2000s. Driven by strong social connections, communal values and a sense of family, the vibrant community of Filipino gamers has since become an integral part of the global Web3 gaming sphere.
Acknowledging the passionate and organic movement from the community, YGG sought to further empower Filipino gamers with a number of programs that help them uncover opportunities to level up in the open Metaverse, like the Web3 Metaversity, the Guild Advancement Program (GAP), Superquests, and the upcoming Web3 Games Summit.
“The strong sense of Filipino culture also translates into online gaming communities within the Web3 space, where social interactions, cooperation, and mutual support play a significant role,” said John Sedano, YGG Pilipinas’ Campaign Director. He reiterated the importance of education and information about other aspects of Web3 beyond gaming as more Filipinos express interest.
“We have a relatively young and tech-savvy population that can easily adapt to new technologies, and we’re here to show them all the opportunities in the Metaverse in a safe learning environment,” Sedano added.
The Web3 Metaversity, a community-backed and community-developed learning platform, offers upskilling and educational opportunities in Web3 gaming skills, including those who are interested in pursuing a career in the industry. The GAP, meanwhile, has offered a cumulative total of over 250 achievements, delivered nearly 5,000 Soulbound NFT rewards, and distributed more than 800,000 YGG tokens to participants of the program in just over a year.
YGG expounded that these achievements have definite criteria to be obtained, such as finishing the season as a top-ranked player for one of YGG’s partnered games or recruiting at least 10 new players to join a sub-guild. Other achievements are more subjective, like showing exceptional leadership or creating content and educational materials, such as a how-to guide or an analytical tool that the rest of the YGG community can use.
These achievements represent the skills demanded of the jobs of the future and the fast-growing Web3 industry, YGG added. More importantly, Filipinos are accumulating these valuable achievements and future-proofed skills by playing video games, having fun with their friends, and being part of a supportive community.
“YGG is building the infrastructure and the technology to help gamers strengthen their Web3 identity and on-chain reputation. We want to make sure that, whenever they accomplish an achievement or unlock a new skill, these will be reflected in their Web3 identities,” said Sedano, who frequently holds AMAs or Ask Me Anything sessions with guild leaders in YGG Pilipinas’ over 91,000-strong Discord community.
YGG is also gearing up for the Web3 Games Summit on November 18 to 25 at the Bonifacio Global City. The event will involve a massive 2-day tournament, a jam-packed 3-day expo, and an intense 24-hour hackathon, along with other exciting side events throughout the week.
Game developers, content creators, and global industry leaders will join the Philippines’ premier Web3 event to connect with the country’s thriving Web3 gaming community. Get first dibs on seats at this week-long event and visit ygg.events to get early bird tickets.
