Sandara Park recalls being scolded by YG Entertainment for not crying upon receiving an award

Can you imagine getting scolded for not crying? Well, that apparently happened to iconic girl group 2NE1, according to Sandara Park.

In a recent guest appearance on Kim Jaejoong’s talk show “JaeFriends,” the Philippines’ “Pambansang Krungkrung” revealed that she and the other 2NE1 members were scolded by their then-agency YG Entertainment after winning the “Song of the Year” Daesang award at the 2009 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) Awards.

The quartet had won the award for their track ‘I Don’t Care,’ which was released as part of their debut EP, “2NE1” in 2009 and was the album’s second lead single.

Dara shared that because she and the rest of the 2NE1 members were still rookies in the K-pop industry at the time, having just debuted months before the annual awards show, they didn’t realize how much of a big deal winning a Daesang award was.

YG Entertainment then reprimanded the group for shedding tears on stage, and compared them to their rival agency at the time, SM Entertainment saying, “Why won’t you cry like groups from SM?”

Sandara Park explained to Kim Jaejoong, who had been signed with SM Entertainment at the time, that “everything was too new” for the quartet and had cried backstage after claiming their award. Jaejoong, who was a former member of the SM Ent. group TVXQ, agreed with her and said that winning a major award as rookies is an unbelievable feat, even for the current generation of K-Pop idols.

Dara also added that she would have been “better off” at SM Entertainment and mentioned how people thought that her past agency had “wasted her looks and time” because of her styling back then.

Sandara Park and Kim Jaejoong are known to have been longtime friends, meeting even before the former’s debut in the K-pop industry.
