Young professionals in China now use popular dating app to look for job offers

Most of us know “Tinder” as a dating app, where you can match and connect with different people by swiping right. However, in China, it also serves as the newest “networking” platform for unemployed youths. Currently, young professionals are using Tinder not just for finding the right one, but also for hunting the right job for them after LinkedIn was phased out from their country.

Recently, a news publication reported that young Chinese job hunters have used Tinder to look for potential job openings. On May 8th, LinkedIn Corporation CEO Ryan Roslansky announced cost-cutting measures such as employee lay-offs and wiping out a networking service named InCareer in China on August 9th due to slow revenue growth and customer behavior modifications.

Based on an article, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that the youth unemployment rate in the said country is approximately 21%, resulting in the use of Tinder and other dating apps as job-seeking platforms for fresh graduates. According to a data analytics report, there were about 275 dating sites in the country that were being downloaded last year.

A fashion degree holder in Beijing, named “Songsong,” shared her experience of using the app to look for a job. She had applied for several job positions in different job sites and hadn’t received any response from employers before she resorted to Tinder. In an interview with Sixth Tone, she updated her profile with a photo of a message saying, “Is anyone short of workers? I’m currently looking for a job. Hire me.”

“I’ve come across various kinds of advertisements and profiles on Tinder. I just thought, ‘Why don’t I advertise myself here for more exposure?,” she said.

Meanwhile, one graduate from Peking University said in the same article that a Tinder date gave her steps on how to use the app when looking for work by matching with people who work in the same industry. However, a Tinder spokesperson advised people not to promote their businesses on the platform, including fundraising, advertising, and marketing, among others for some ethical concerns.
