Contrary to Margot Robbie’s serial Barbie-inspired looks at every promotional event for the film, musician Sam Smith seems to reject the publicity stunt.
The 31-year-old singer walked the pink carpet in London’s Leicester Square for the European premiere for ‘Barbie’ on July 12 in baggy jeans and an oversized navy “16 XL” Vetements sweater. He attended the premiere to promote “Man I Am,” a song written from Ken’s perspective which will be part of the movie’s official soundtrack.
Smith himself took to Instagram a photo of his unconventional Barbie outfit, thanking the Vetements team for “making me feel sexy.”

In a Harper’s Bazaar interview with Guram Gvasalia, Vetements creative director, it was revealed that Smith’s ensemble was not a mere outfit but a “statement of inclusion.” It brought a message to all those who feel like they don’t fit in that “you can achieve everything you want without becoming like everyone else!”
Smith’s unconventional look may have also been a discreet reference to the inclusivity in ‘Barbie.’ In fact, Simu Liu, who stars in the film alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, opened up about director Greta Gerwig’s priority to cast people of diverse shapes and sizes for the movie’s dance sequences.
Liu told Vanity Fair, “We were able to cast people of different shapes, sizes, differently abled, to all participate in this dance — all under this message of: You don’t have to be blonde, white, or X, Y, Z in order to embody what it means to be a Barbie or a Ken.”
Mattel had been in hot water for promoting an unrealistic body type with its Barbie figures. In recent years, the company addressed these issues and made necessary efforts to promote inclusivity in their products.
