SM Entertainment gears up for first part of ‘SM 3.0,’ starting with NCT 127

NCT 127 will be characters in a manhwa (South Korean comic)!

On March 16, 2023, SM Entertainment and NCT 127 announce that they will be launching the group’s first graphic novel titled, “NCT 127: Limitless.” The manhwa will be in collaboration with Z2 Comics and Universal Music Group and will be the first graphic novel to use K-Pop IP (Intellectual Property).

“NCT 127: Limitless” is named after the NCT sub-unit’s 2017 single, the manhwa will be following the NCT 127 members as they embark on the biggest performance in a sold-out stadium in New York City. “The night before the concert, however, the group encounters mysterious dreams, thrusting Mark, Johnny, Taeyong, Jungwoo, and Doyoung in otherworldly scenarios,” explains Z2 Comics in their press statement.

“This ultimately creates a reality-crossing mystery that the five members alongside Taeil, Yuta, Jaehyun, and Haechan will unite to solve. As NCT 127 grapples with this enigma, they must overcome their fears in both the real world and this new surreal dreamscape.”

K-Pop Intellectual Property gives a whole different meaning to the K-Pop experience; meaning, it’s now more than just the music and artist and fans.

According to BJ Yang, the CEO of Universal Music Group Korea, “It is truly great to see how music and artist IP expand without boundaries. From our existing partnership with Z2 Comics, and together with SM Entertainment, Universal Music Group has successfully managed to crossover K-Pop intellectual properties to the graphic novel industry. Together, we have created a unique way to enjoy graphic novels, music, and the K-Pop genre-all-in-one.”

NCT 127 had recently just finished their “Neo City – The Link” concert tour, where they toured 28 cities in total from December 2021 to January 2023. The concert tour recorded over 700,000 attendees from studios and arenas—the group’s biggest tour since their debut.

“NCT 127: Limitless” is set for release in summer 2023 with 2 editions: a standard hardcover with 9 versions featuring the members of NCT 127, and the deluxe hardcover, which will be signed and have nine art prints illustrated by Kalya Felty, a custom photocard featuring NCT 127, and one certificate of authenticity. The graphic novel was co-written by Allison Goulet-Scott, with the art by Kalya Felty and 24×4. Felty and colorist Megan Huang are the cover artists for the graphic novel.
