French-American actor and Academy Awards nominee Timothée Chalamet is set to enter the ‘world of pure imagination’ as he will bring the iconic character, ‘Willy Wonka’ to his younger days for the ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ prequel film entitled, ‘Wonka.’
Adapted by Warner Bros. Discovery, the Road Dahl’s iconic book character is being recreated again to be played by Chalamet on the big screen. The actor will be portraying the young ‘Wonka,’ the lead role in the prequel movie — taking the life of the chocolate factory owner played by Johnny Depp, years before he met the kid Charlie Bucket played by Freddie Highmore in the 2005 film, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’
Back in October 2021, the spin-off to the 2005 film directed by Tim Burton was announced. The news gained attention all over the internet, and many people were happy to have a glimpse of Chalamet slaying the famous chocolatier’s look. On Instagram, Warner Bros. Pictures reposted the actor’s photo dressed as ‘Willy Wonka’ and wearing a chocolate-like hat.
The statement reads, “Re-post from @tchalamet: The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last…”
Here are some positive comments regarding the ‘Bones and All’ actor as the newest ‘Wonka’:
“Timothee chalamet as wonka is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“Wow. Timothee Chalamet as Wonka looks beautiful.”
“This could be decent, I feel like he’s got the acting style to pull it off.”
While some seemed satisfied with Chalamet getting the coveted role, many were frustrated to see another remake of the classic flick. People believed that no one could beat Gene Wilder’s performance in the 1971 original film, ‘Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory’ as the eccentric chocolatier, not even Johnny Depp in 2005 and the ‘Call Me By Your Name’ star this 2023.
“Gene Wilder is the GOAT. Just stop,” an internet user wrote.
“Extremely excited about him playing Bob Dylan. Could not give a flying F what he does as Wonka. What, is he gonna do the inane Depp voice? or yet another unwelcome new take messing with our beloved memories of the great Gene Wilder,” one said.
“mr chalamet is in for one hell of a backlash. He hasn’t been good in anything since CMBYN,” another added.
Meanwhile, some supporters defended the prequel and the French-American actor.
“Yall it’s an origin story, not a Remake. That’s why they chose a young actor. And honestly, I think he fits the role very well. Maybe it’ll show Willy slowly getting “wonkier” and eccentric,” a supporter explained.
Another said, “This movie has the chance to be very good. Wonka origin story always sounded really cool. He mentions some of his past exploits in the book.”

Despite the mixed reactions from viewers, the controversial ‘Wonka’ movie directed by Paul King is set to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 17, 2023.
