Manila creative scenes welcome 2023 at ‘New Year, New Scene’

Manila-based musicians, artists, and small businesses are set to showcase their work at SYQL Productions’ (@syqlprod) New Year, New Scene on January 21 at 123 Block, Mandaluyong.

The indie production house’s debut gig will feature performances by munimuni, syd hartha, ena mori, Ciudad, SOS, and Paolo Sandejas. Electronic musicians PIKUNIN and dot.jaime from BuwanBuwan Collective and DJs SLEEPY PASTA and CHAIN MESSAGES from independent radio platform Manila Community Radio are also set to perform as New Year, New Scene will be staged in partnership with the two collectives.

Illustrators awkwardbutable, KITA, betsy.cola, and jemima_grace_, and VFX & CGI artist Miko del Rosario will give short talks on their work and will run merchandise booths at the event proper. Photographer Michael Perfecto will run a portrait booth at the event where gig-goers can have their photograph taken for free under professional lighting and direction by Perfecto. SYQL has also partnered with independent video production house Saint’s Production to produce a short documentary-style video about New Year, New Scene that will be released post-event.

More niche creative communities will also have an opportunity to shine at ‘New Year, New Scene’: women-led spiritual community Celessya headed by Aly Dimaculangan of theblessedbhie will provide spiritual services and tools; small analog music businesses Acetate Music and Good Vibrations Records will set up shop to sell vinyl records and CDs respectively; and Makati vegan coffeehouse Odd Cafe will sell specialty coffee at the event, representing the third-wave coffee community.

Tickets are on sale for Php 600 each.

New Year, New Scene is SYQL Productions’ debut event. The indie production house aims to contribute to “a gig culture that is accessible and collaborative, connecting the diverse Filipino creative scenes regardless of medium, genre, or inspiration.”
