Attention, Avatar fans!
The avatarverse is headed to the big screen as three new animated films are now in production.
Paramount and Nickelodeon announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival that a trilogy of animated films in the Avatar universe is currently in the works. One of the three films will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, who previously worked on the highly lauded Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. She will be joined by several Avatar veterans, including Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, the original creators of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series, The Legend of Korra. They will join as producers on the film alongside Eric Coleman, who worked as the series’ executive producer and production manager.
Ramsey Naito, the president of Animation & Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, showed his confidence in the creators and Lauren to produce great work.
“As original creators, Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey.
Latifa Ouaou, the Executive Vice President of Movies and Global Franchises at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, will oversee the animated Avatar film from development to production, working alongside Jason McConnell, the Vice President of Animation at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.
According to a report from Avatar News, the three films will each focus on different characters from the series — the first movie will reportedly be a prequel as it will focus on Avatar Kiyoshi, the second film will focus on Zuko, and the third and final film will be about Korra. The titles and release dates for each film have yet to be revealed. In the meantime, we also have the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series to look forward to. /TV
