Is it possible to teach children the horrors and realities of Martial Law under the Marcos regime? Isang Harding Papel: A Martial Law Musical attempts to do just that. After a successful first run, the play will be restaged this February 10, 2017 at the AFP Theatre, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Isang Harding Papel tells the story of Jenny, a young girl who regularly visits her mother, a political prisoner, in jail. It tells the story of Martial Law through a child’s point of view, and shows us how childhood is defined and redefined in trying times.
The musical is adapted from the Adarna House children’s book of the same name written by Augie Rivera and illustrated by Rommel Joson. It was written for stage by Nanoy Rafael and set to music by Thea Tolentino. Boni Juan is the production designer for the restaging, directed by Nor Domingo.
Isang Harding Papel: A Martial Law Musical is part of Hinabing Haraya, the annual theatrical production of Raya School, a progressive school in Quezon City. Teachers and students from private elementary and junior high schools get heavily discounted tickets to see the 2 p.m. show of Isang Harding Papel. Tickets should be reserved in advance.
