Watching the first episode of Dragon Ball Super felt like reuniting with your childhood friends

Kamehamehaaaa! Dragon Ball Super, the first Dragon Ball TV franchise in about 18 years, made its premiere on Japanese network Fuji TV last Sunday, July 5, and it was every bit as nostalgic as everybody expected it would be.

While we’re not going to spoil the episode for you, it is obvious with the current cast of characters that Dragon Ball Super will contain story elements that ties it with the last two DBZ movies “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods” and “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F.”

Creator Akira Toriyama is credited with “original story and character concepts.” He started Dragon Ball in 1984 as a manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump and has since sold over 230 million copies worldwide. Here’s the official plot summary of the first episode according to Shueisha’s V Jump magazine:

“After defeating Majin Buu, life is peaceful once again. Ordered by Chi-chi to earn money, Goku works even as he wants to train even more. Meanwhile, Goten, about to become a brother-in-law to Videl, sets out on a journey with Trunks to find her a present.”

And here’s the opening trailer to whet your appetite in case you haven’t downloa— *cough* legally seen the episode (and we’re betting you haven’t since the international release date is yet to be announced):

The opening theme song, “Chozetsu Dynamic!” was performed by Kazuya Yoshii of The Yellow Monkey — best known internationally for the Rurouni Kenshin ending theme “Tactics”. Sure, it’s no Cha-La Head-Cha-La but let’s give the new generation of fans a go at something new.

We’re sure you will find ways to catch the first episode somewhere in the wilds of the internet so while you’re gathering seeds from peers, check out the official Dragon Ball Super website for more Super Saiyan nourishment.
