The hit series “13 Reasons Why” follows the story of high school student Hannah Baker who left 13 cassette tapes explaining the reasons why she chose to take her own life. The show gained popularity for a number of things. Among these are its representation of timely and relevant themes, compelling storyline, and of course, the strong performances of the cast. In fact, the show introduced us to many young iconic actors from Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, Alisha Boe, Brandon Flynn, Ross Butler, and a lot more.
But the viewer’s treatment and appreciation of the show may be in huge contrast to how the actors were being treated.
Tommy Dorfman, who played Ryan Shaver in the series, took to Threads her revelation on how much she was being paid overall for working on the first season of “13 Reasons Why.” Dorfman wrote, “My earnings for the entire first season of 13 Reasons Why were $29,953.24 prior to agency and manager fees (20%) and taxes). 8 episodes over six months. I did all of the promo and had KEY ART for this show, flew a round trip from NYC to SF to shoot for every episode, and was kept for days without pay/working. I barely qualified for insurance. Within the first 28 days of release, the show’s Season 1 garnered a total of 476 million view hours. This is why we strike.” See the Thread post here. Dorfman is among many actors who have been revealing how little they are earning on social media with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Other familiar names include Mandy Moore (unfortunately, yes) for her show “This Is Us,” and Sean Gunn for “Gilmore Girls.”
Actors and writers are on strike protesting and demanding better pay and working conditions, not to mention, protection from present and future AI threats.
