The ‘Doomsday Clock’ just moved 90 seconds closer to midnight. Here’s how the internet reacted

‘Doomsday’ is marked by predictions of impending catastrophe and future universal annihilation.

Welp.

Due to the destructive effects of technological advancements, the earth is foreseen to experience self-inflicted disasters, which is why we have a ‘clock’ that is believed to warn the public about ‘doomsday’ and how close humans are to destroying the planet of life.

First invented in 1947, the ‘Doomsday Clock’ is a symbol of the perils facing humanity as a result of failed scientific and technological achievements. The man-made clock has been updated 24 times by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The closer the clock’s hands move toward midnight, the closer humanity moves toward man-made havoc like the threat of nuclear risk.

For the last two years, the clock’s hands have been set by atomic scientists at 100 seconds. On January 24, the clock moved 90 seconds to midnight— the closest time to a global apocalypse the world has ever seen. Scientists reset the time 10 seconds closer than it has been for the past three years due to great threats of nuclear war—particularly caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, the pandemic, and climate change.

Because of the news, the hashtag #Doomsdayclock trended on Twitter, eliciting mixed reactions from users. People have been posting their negative reactions, saying that the doomsday clock news is just a ‘hoax’ causing extreme fear and anxiety to many.

Other Twitter users, on the other hand, have used their wit to respond to the news in a humorous manner.

Even if the Doomsday clock is accurate or not, everyone must now pay attention to how we can restore humanity and the earth. With that, we can sleep peacefully at night without thinking of how many seconds of life we still have on earth.
