That moment when those who should heal you leaves you wounded even more.
Kristina Rodriguez of Indian Trail, North Carolina was worried that her iron was low, so she had blood work done by her medical service provider, Lake Park Family Practice of Carolinas Healthcare System. To her surprise, the doctors listed “lesbianism” as a medical problem on her record.
“This listed as a medical problem could really set someone back, could mess with their self-esteem and could make them think something is wrong with them,” Rodriguez told WSOC. “It’s 2017. It’s very normal for people to have a same-sex partner.”
Rodriguez said that when her doctor and a director of Carolinas HealthCare System contacted her after her complaint, they told her that lesbianism was listed to protect her from being offended.
Say what?!
It’s outraging to know that people still think a person’s sexuality is offensive, and in cases such as this, considered a medical condition or problem.
Through WSOC, the hospital released a statement saying, “Sexual orientation is not a clinical diagnosis…” They also said that they will be working closely with their staff to ensure information included in medical records are appropriate and respectful.
“I think I will always be documented as lesbianism. Maybe I can call out of work for my condition. I’m not sure,” Rodriguez jokingly said.
Now raise that rainbow flag with pride!
