Social Media for Good: Celebrities and Influencers raise funds for COVID-19 relief efforts

Social media has once again proven itself to be an integral part of society now that people are quarantined at home in an effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve. With such computer-mediated technology readily available, it is good to see celebrities and influencers use their reach and influence to raise funds for the provision of protective gear to frontliners and basic necessities to unemployed workers.

Local actress, Maine Mendoza started an online fundraising project called “DoNation Drive” with the goal of providing basic necessities to minimum wage earners who were left with no work during this pandemic. Through the power of social media, she was able to raise around PHP588,000 in just seven days. Social media star, Mimiyuuuh also did her fair share in helping the community. She held an online Zumba fundraiser on Instagram Live, with each view worth PHP2. Proceeds were then donated to Caritas Manila and Save San Roque.

International celebrities are also doing the same, one of whom is American stand-up comedian, Cedric the Entertainer who recently hosted a star-studded, marathon fundraiser called Def Comedy Jam: Healing Through Laughter. With big names like Usher, Tiffany Hadish, Marlon Wayans, and Founder of Def Comedy Jam himself, Russell Simmons joining the show, the live stream drew more than one million viewers across Facebook and Twitch, and raised over USD88,000.

Co-produced by Gushcloud International, the goal of the Def Comedy Jam live stream was to raise funds to help provide for the basic needs of essential workers in vulnerable and underserved communities in New York, the epicenter of the COVID-19 disaster within the United States. Supplies include items such as masks, hand sanitizers, and more.
