100-year-old woman gets birthday wish granted–to be locked up in jail

When people blow out the candles on their birthday cakes, they often wish for something special to happen to them. Whether that’d be something as simple as getting a text from their crush or as far-fetched as winning the lottery, you can wish for almost anything on your special day. And this 100-year-old woman took this sentiment to heart when she actualized her birthday wish–to be locked up in jail.

Earlier this month, American woman Ruth Bryant was celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends when they heard police sirens outside the Cambridge Hills Assisted Living Center. When police officers entered the retirement home, they immediately approached the matriarch and asked her, “Are you Miss Bryant?”

According to WRAL’s report, this was the conversation that ensued:

“It all depends on what you want,” Bryant said. To which the officer replied, “Here’s what I want. I want you!” while carrying the elderly woman out of the home.

Bryant pretended to put up a fight and kicked the officers as they carried her out.

Obviously, seeing this scene unfold, Bryant’s loved ones were shocked but it was all really just a stint between Bryant and the North Carolina police department to fulfill the elderly woman’s birthday wish.

Upon arriving at the precinct, the authorities allowed Bryant one phone call and took a mug shot. Police joked that she was arrested for indecent exposure and they sentenced her to a few minutes in the jail cell.

After she was released, officers presented her with an orange tracksuit imprinted with the words “PERSON COUNTY JAIL.”

Bryant was overjoyed with the birthday ruse saying, “I’m in the jailhouse now! I finally got here!”

After this prank though, she was returned to the retirement home to enjoy the rest of the day with her family and friends.

When WRAL asked her daughter Marian Oakley what she had to say about this stint, she shared, “I know that she is a hundred years old, but I didn’t know that they’d be going this far.”

Although it may seem like a strange request for a birthday celebration, what matters most is that Ruth Bryant’s 100th birthday was one she won’t soon forget.
