University of Asia and the Pacific’s Dulaang ROC presents ‘Juan Tamban’

Dulaang ROC is University of Asia and the Pacific’s (UA&P) pioneer non-profit theatre organization – established on October 2, 1989. For many years, the organization has been receiving prestigious awards from UA&P, such as Best Organization (1996, 2007 & 2010), Best Project (2010 -2011), Outstanding Organization of the Year (2010-2011) and Project of the Year (2014, 2016, 2017, & 2018). This year, the organization will continue to be true to their mission in promoting scripts written by both professional and emerging Filipino playwrights inside and outside UA&P; as well as developing people’s appreciation for theatre arts. With that said, they will be staging a Filipino contemporary classic, “Juan Tamban”.

Written by Palanca Awardee and Philippine Education Theatre Association (PETA) writer, Malou Leviste Jacob, “Juan Tamban” merited 2nd prize in the three-act play category (Filipino Division) of the 1879 Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards and the Manila Critics Circle Award in 1985 after it was published in 1984. It was initially staged by the PETA Kalinangan Ensemble in 1979 and has been countlessly staged in several university theatre organizations and professional theatre companies.

“Juan Tamban” tells the story of Marina Torres, a graduate student and social worker, who is assigned a case of the street urchin, Juan. It is through this case that she perceives the life of the lower class through their eyes. This production aims to provide the audience actualities and shed light on issues that have not changed since its initial debut 41 years ago.

This production will be starring students from UA&P and members of Dulaang ROC with Luke Vicente as Juan Tamban, Samantha Co as Marina Torres, Jomari Villanueva as Mr. De Leon, Oliver Caedo as Mang Tino, and Rafael Gonzales, Marielle Forbes, Frahn Ongkingco, Jhabes Monzones, Kim Barrozo, Earl Harry Bea, Amanda Corvera, Gabriel Fajardo, Isaac Ramento, Ella Carreon, Junee Templo, Iggy Arevalo, Leona Ambagan, and Jio Genson as the Ensemble.

Directed by the Co-Founder of Theatre Titas, Cheese Mendez, “Juan Tamban” will be held on March 10, 12, 16-17, 19-20, 21, 2020 from 7:50 to 9:00PM at Telengtan Hall, 5/F ACB Bldg., UA&P, Pearl drive, Ortigas Center, Pasig City, 1605.
