The kind of music that Joey Ayala and his band, Bagong Lumad, plays often gets buried under the pulsating echoes of EDM that fills our airwaves. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the number of young people that have heard of their music continues to get smaller.
Joey Ayala, however, seeks to defy the norms. For the first time in 25 years, Ayala and his band, Ang Bagong Lumad went back to the Music Museum this past Saturday, September 16, for a concert like no other. Dubbed Mandiriwa, Ayala showcased some of his popular songs: Karaniwang Tao, Tabi Po, Agila, Magkaugnay, Simpleng Yaman, Walang Hanggang Paalam, Bathala, Basta May Saging, Padayon, Machine Answering, and Pasasalamat.
An interplay of instruments ranging from Kulintang to Hegalong were fused with modern instrumentation of the drums, bass, and electric guitar, creating a distinct Pinoy sound. Fellow artists Bullet Dumas, Dong Abay, Bayang Barrios, Juan Miguel Severo, and Gloc 9, performed alongside Ayala during some of his sets.
It was truly a night that displayed the beauty of Filipino music. Salamat sa inyo, Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad
