Ah, those felt like yesterday, but—I hate to break it to you—all of those happened twenty years ago. Yup, two decades can feel like a blink, and we can’t believe it either!
As we’re now in 2026 and preparing for what’s ahead of us (manifesting a good year *fingers crossed*), let us look back and revisit everything that happened two decades ago—when things were simpler and we didn’t have to worry about life (take us back, please?).
Movies we love: From Devil Wears Prada to High School Musical
They say 2006 was one of the best years in the movie industry. A lot of films that we loved growing up were released twenty years ago, and looking back, they weren’t wrong, though!
Devil Wears Prada
One of the most iconic films that came out in 2006 was the David Frankel-directed film, ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ which starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
Based on the 2003 novel of the same name, it follows the story of Andy Sachs, an inspiring journalist who starts working as an assistant to the chief editor of Runway, the top-selling high-fashion magazine in New York City, the ever-cynical Miranda Priestly.
Its success and influence can still be felt in pop culture today, and this May 2026, a sequel to the film is set to be released—and we all can’t wait to follow Andy and Miranda’s new journey!
She’s the Man
Ah, who would ever forget ‘She’s the Man?’ Amanda Bynes continued her breakthrough with this romantic-comedy teen sports film, where she starred as Viola Hastings, a teenager who enters her twin brother’s new boarding school and pretends to be a boy just to play on the boys’ soccer team.
Up until now, it still baffles me how people didn’t notice that Viola isn’t a guy. But hey, at least she meets the charming Duke Orsino (Channing Tatum).
Cars
Produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, ‘Cars’ tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a young self-obsessed race car, who finds himself stranded in a forgotten town called Radiator Springs on his way to the most important race of his life.
As he gets stuck, he begins to reevaluate his life priorities. The film achieved huge success, launching a multimedia franchise that included two sequels and two spin-offs.
High School Musical
The karaoke duet of Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) during New Year’s Eve will forever be engraved in everyone’s minds.
The plot may be cliché—a school basketball team captain and an academically gifted student auditioning for a school musical, which is way out of their league, and ends up falling for each other while causing division within the school’s status quo—but no one can deny how the film and its soundtrack shaped a new generation. Not to mention the choreography, too!

Every generation has its iconic TV shows, and the ones released in 2006 were anything but ordinary because years later, they still hit differently today!

Ask anyone you know what show they remember from their childhood, and many will probably say ‘Wonder Pets!.’ I mean, who could ever forget these three adorable animals—Linny the Guinea Pig, Tuck the Turtle, and Ming-Ming Duckling—who travel around the world to rescue animals in need?
And of course, there’s the catchy song that everyone keeps singing, which even has a Tagalog version!

Death Note
Raise your hand if you, at some point, had a notebook where you wrote a list of people you secretly deemed evil. Well, I did—because of the series ‘Death Note.’
This anime follows high school student Light Yagami, who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing their name in it. After discovering its power, he attempts to cleanse the world of evil. ‘Death Note ‘was received positively by the public for its unique premise and psychological thriller elements. It was also highly influential because, at the time, wherever you looked, you were sure to see someone owning a black notebook labeled “Death Note.”
But just to be clear, though: I didn’t wish for anyone’s death!
Ugly Betty
We don’t know about you, but we all love a show where someone embraces her uniqueness and challenges society’s expectations and stereotypes.
Perhaps this is why ‘Ugly Betty’ holds a special place in our hearts—and of course, America Ferrera, who stars as the ever-quirky Betty Suarez!
Hannah Montana
2006 is THAT year for Miley Cyrus as she graced our TV screens as Miley Stewart, a teenager living a double life as the famous pop star Hannah Montana.

In 2006, major technologies emerged that transformed our everyday life—from the way we communicated, connected, and experienced the world.
Ah, Twitter—the bird app we all came to love before it became X.
Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and was launched in July 2006. It quickly gained popularity among social media users due to its unique format, where posts were initially limited to 140 characters before being expanded to 280 characters in 2017. In 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter, and the platform was renamed X the following year.
Although founded in 2004, Facebook only gained widespread popularity in 2006 after the platform opened to users aged 13 and above, as long as they had a valid email address to register with.
This move led to a massive surge in users, eventually surpassing MySpace. The platform became the most downloaded app of the 2010s, and to this day, Facebook ranks as the third most visited website in the world.
Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii was considered one of the top game consoles of its time because of its features that redefined how people played games.
Its innovative motion-based gameplay attracted a massive audience of all ages, including non-gamers. Aside from the console itself, Nintendo also released a series of games under the Wii brand, including Wii Sports, The Legend of Zelda, and more.
