A day of doing nothing and merely lying in bed earned a Chinese online influencer 300,000 Yuan or more than 2 million Pesos.
The influencer said that it was “hard-earned money,” but such sentiment did not land well with social media users.
The influencer goes by the alias Gu Xixi and has amassed 5 million followers on a major social media platform. Gu was known for her livestreams where she was simply lying on bed and instantly garnered earnings from the engagements, views, and comments on her videos.
Between February 7 and 16, Gu divulged that her sales from a live-streaming platform equated to a whopping 10.39 million Yuan (83 million Pesos), with around 2.79 million Yuan earned from commission.
In another livestreaming platform, the influencer shared that she earned 8.94 million Yuan (71.4 million Pesos) only within the span of seven days.
“Today, I spent the entire day lying in bed, did nothing, and still made 1.16 million Yuan in sales on my Douyin shop, with an estimated commission of 303,200 yuan,” she willingly disclosed.
In a follow-up statement, Gu made it clear just how much she relished her means of earning money, The more you cannot stand seeing me doing well, and the more you criticize me, the more I make. It is not about earning hundreds of thousands of yuan per month, it is about earning hundreds of thousands of yuan per day! Understand?”
This was not the first time that Gu ventured into publishing eccentric online content as she previously went viral and rose to fame for her bizarre stunts, such as swallowing a ping pong ball.
Due to her “vulgar content,” Gu’s account was temporarily suspended multiple times for the absurdity of her content such as insulin people online and livestreaming herself while washing her buttocks only to boost online engagements.
Even at the age of 15, Gu was previously sentenced to two and a half years probation for affraying or causing a brawl in public. She seemed to be apathetic toward the incident and was not concerned about how it would affect her children’s future.
Tracing back, the recent livestream of Gu was not the first time she flaunted her wealth. In November of last year, she shared her plan to purchase a 2,000-square-metre villa in Nantong, with an estimated cost of over 20 million yuan (159 million Pesos).
Nonetheless, Gu expressed her indifference toward the backlash she faced online, “Do you know why I do not frequently share my sales performance now? Every time I do, there is a problem, right? It causes trouble, right? This time, it makes the headlines, right? That is why influencers like to act like they are poor,” she said.
The influencer defended herself that whatever she earned for her online content was all but hard-earned money and it is not out of illegal means, “We did not steal, we did not rob. All the money we make is hard-earned. When I said I did nothing all day, it was meant to provoke people. Do you think I can really do nothing all day? I said it just to irritate those haters.”
Nonetheless, online observers and those who engaged in her content heavily criticized Gu for redefining what hard-earned money truly meant and have called the platform to ban her account.
