After a gut-wrenching Eliminations Round and a thrilling Finals Rounds, Alistair Ivan Y. Siahingco conquered the top spot at the 12th Annual Nationwide Search for the Little Math Wizard last November.
This year, young mathematicians of Grades 4 to 6 from DepEd-recognized schools across the country had their fun at the 12th Annual Nationwide Search for the Little Math Wizard. A renowned mathematics competition in the country, the event serves as an avenue for young students to showcase and hone their mathematics skills by engaging them in healthy competition and celebrate mathematics in its advancement and extensive influence.
For its 12th iteration, the UP Math Club held the competition with the official endorsement of the UP Diliman Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Society of the Philippines as well as an official advisory from DepEd-NCR.
This year’s iteration was the largest in the history of the competition, engaging 233 contestants from 28 schools across 5 regions.
The contest was split into two phases: a written Elimination Round, which only the top 30 students made through, and a Finals Round, a live raise-boards contest that culminated in a buzzer round among the top 6 contestants. The Finals Round was further split into 3 stages: the Apprentice Round, the Sorcerer Round, and the Wizard Round, each with questions of varying difficulty.
Last November 23, 2024, Grade 4 student Alistair Ivan Y. Siahingco from Saint Jude Catholic School in Manila prevailed as the Little Math Wizard and champion. He was also awarded as the Top Grade 4 Eliminations Scorer.
“My experience was good. It was fun,” Alistair shared in an on-the-spot interview with UP Math Club.
Apart from his title as the Little Math Wizard, Alistair also received a cash prize of Php 7,000.00 plus 25k worth of other prizes from Scholastic Philippines.
Also awarded was the Little Math Sorcerer (2nd Place) Heal Job U. Esio from Pangasinan Universal Institute, who was also the Top Grade 6 Eliminations Scorer.
The title for the Little Math Apprentice (3rd Place) was awarded to Miguel S. Yee from St. John’s Institute in Bacolod.
The Top Grade 5 Eliminations Scorer was Nathan Y. Gohoc from MGC New Life Christian Academy.
The next iteration of the Annual Nationwide Search for the Little Math Wizard is slated for the last quarter of this year.
