‘We were not informed’: Olympians Finnegan and Malabuyo address absence from heroes’ welcome

Last August 14, a Heroes’ Welcome celebration was held in Manila to celebrate and honor our Filipino athletes who competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The event was attended by Filipino athletes Carlos Yulo, EJ Obiena, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petacio, Lauren Hoffman, John Cabang Tolentino, Elreen Ando, Kiyomi Watanabe, Samantha Catantan, Joanie Delgaco, Kayla Sanchez, Jarod Hatch, John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno, Eumir Marcial, Hergie Bacyadan, and Carlo Paalam.

However, social media was abuzz with questions as people noticed the absence of three key figures from the Philippine gymnastics team: Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, and Levi Ruivivar. Fans were quick to inquire about why these athletes were missing from both the reception at Malacañang Palace on August 13 and the parade in Manila the following day.

Aleah Finnegan responded to a comment on TikTok, addressing the questions surrounding her absence, “We were not informed of the event.” This revelation left many fans disappointed, as they expected all the Olympians to be present at the celebration.

Similarly, Emma Malabuyo echoed these sentiments in a separate social media exchange, stating, “I wanted to go but they didn’t tell me about it.” The lack of communication with these athletes has led to widespread concern and surprise, with numerous social media users expressing their dismay and disappointment under her post.

“You deserve the prize and reward,” one user wrote. Another commented, “Sayang at wala kayo sa Philippines. You guys have incentives too. Sana makuha niyo once narito na kayo sa Pinas.” [It’s a shame you weren’t in the Philippines. You guys have incentives too. Hopefully, you’ll receive them once you’re here.]

In a recent TikTok video, Aleah Finnegan shared her excitement about traveling to the Philippines, posting from the airport as she prepared for her journey. Fans were thrilled to hear the news and eagerly awaited her arrival. Meanwhile, just a day earlier, Emma Malabuyo also posted a TikTok video from the Philippine Airlines airport. Many viewers expressed their happiness in the comments, celebrating this exciting update.

While the reasons behind this oversight remain unclear, the situation has sparked a conversation about ensuring all Olympians are included in future celebrations. As Finnegan and Malabuyo arrive in the Philippines, fans hope for more transparency and better communication, allowing these gymnasts to be recognized for their achievements alongside their fellow athletes.
