Akili McDowell, known for his roles in the Showtime series ‘Billions’ and the OWN series ‘David Makes Man’, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting at a Houston apartment complex. The Harris County sheriff’s office reported that McDowell faces charges related to the death of Cesar Peral on July 20.
According to ABC News, McDowell remains in jail with a $400,000 (approximately Php 23.1 million) bond. As of Monday afternoon, he was still being held at the Harris County Jail Facility, according to online jail records. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that McDowell was recently taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail, as posted on Sheriff Ed Gonzalez’s Facebook page.
His attorney, listed in court records, had not responded to requests for a statement. “This is an unfortunate situation, and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy,” said his manager, Jonell Whitt.
The investigation revealed that deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the parking lot of an apartment complex at 13503 North Thorntree in East Harris County. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive man with gunshot wounds. Initially believed to be in his 20s, the victim was later identified as Cesar Peralta and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told the sheriff’s office that Peralta had been involved in a physical altercation with another man, who fled the scene on foot after the shooting.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Harris County police records indicate McDowell, arrested on August 2 on suspicion of murder, was out on bond for a theft charge at the time. McDowell had been booked on the theft charge on August 1, just one day before his arrest in connection with Peralta’s murder.
Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Homicide Unit.
