‘Copycat?’: NewJeans called out for having concept similarities with 90s Mexican girl group ‘Jeans’

The girl group NewJeans (consisting of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) has been receiving plagiarism allegations because of the likeness of their concepts, costume styles, and music videos with the 90s Mexican girl group Jeans. ADOR’s CEO Min Hee Jin’s creativity and originality were put into question after Korean fans stitched side-by-side photos of NewJeans and Jeans.

A user tweeted the photos of both girl groups’ ‘similar’ concepts and pointed out the issue has been going viral among Korean social media users.

One user replied to the post and said, “Oh God…This is just a coincidence. I’ve seen the videos and the music is just crap. These people see one or two things similar and it’s immediately plagiarism ”

This comment garnered replies as well. One user snapped back and replied, “So it’s coincidence when its nwjns but it’s “plagiarism” when it comes to other grps?”

“Ngl, it looks suspish. But where is the line between” inspiration and plagiarism?” another user claimed.

One other user revealed another side-by-side comparison of the style, branding, logo, and dance moves. The user expressed disappointment over the management of ADOR and the CEO Min Hee Jin for not trying to produce something that is rightfully theirs.

Following the thread, the user also posted a couple more comparisons of the girl groups’ similar costumes, scenes, and ideas.

Another user who can understand and speak Spanish commented and said, “I understand Spanish perfectly, and the lyrics of the songs have the SAME theme and direction as the NJ songs, just with different words and in a different language. If it was just the aesthetics, I would think they were inspired by Jeans, but the lyrics are very similar. FR”

Is NewJeans literally the new ‘Jeans’? With all the issues ADOR is facing right now, it’s unclear whether they would still release a statement regarding the allegations or not.
