The 54-year-old R&B singer Brian McKnight is facing backlash and possible career cancellation for openly disowning his four older children, Brian Jr., Niko, Brianna, and Clyde, from previous relationships.
In an Instagram reel McKnight uploaded last January, one of his followers commented in support of the singer’s decision to cut ties. He featured this follower’s comment in his Instagram Q&A, titled #weeklyreplies.
“I wanna big up my man right here. He gets it,” he stated.
“You have to get rid of the evil and the negativity — even if that evil and negativity is related,” he continued.
He proceeded to say that he wanted to use his platform to spread positivity. He also mentioned that he would only be responding to positive comments in the coming weeks and winked at the camera.
“We’ll see. See you next week.” He said before the video ended.
One user asked who exactly were the children he was talking about; he made it clear by enumerating the names of his 2 stepchildren, Julia and Jack, and his biological son with his wife Leilani he named McKnight Jr. However, users were concerned as his oldest son with ex-wife Julie was also McKnight Jr.
“People are weird to agree with someone disowning your children, but your step children get praises. Wth is that all about, how would you feel if something happened to your adult children?’ One user wrote.
His stepdaughter Julia is often posted on the singer’s Instagram account, often with words of affection and pride for being his ‘one and only daughter.’
A user left a comment saying, “You have a daughter I wonder how this post makes her feel.”
McKnight replied with a video saying that Julia feels great. He also said that Julia ‘understands the scriptures’ and quoted Exodus 20:12, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
“She honors us, in return we honor her…How does she feel? She feels great,” McKnight added.
Someone eventually called McKnight’s video and rebutted with citations from the bible as well. The user also put a “#carryon” at the end of her statement. McKnight replied:
While others expressed their disappointment and confusion over the family feud brought upon the McKnights, some people still expressed their support for his decisions and congratulated him for a new start in life.
