Che’Nelle makes comeback with new song featuring Japanese lyrics, her first in six years

Che’Nelle released ‘I AM,’ her first CD and digital single with Japanese lyrics in six years, on December 13.

Che’Nelle made her global debut in 2007 on the major US label Capitol Records. Her song ‘Love with DJ’ from her first album was a big hit in Japan, and the album reached No. 1 on the Oricon Western music charts in Japan and also won the Rookie of the Year award at the Gold Disc Awards. Later, ‘Baby I Love You,’ a cover of TEE’s famous song with English lyrics, created a sensation in Japan and made her a household name in the J-pop world. After that, ‘Believe’, the theme song for the movie ‘BRAVE HEARTS Umizaru,’ and ‘Happiness,’ the theme song for the Fuji TV drama ‘Dear Sister,’ became big hits. But with a number of personal events since 2018 such as childbirth and childcare, as well as restrictions on visiting Japan during the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been six years since she has released a CD or sung a new song with Japanese lyrics.

I AM

The title track, ‘I AM,’ was composed by SUNNY BOY, a producer and songwriter who has produced numerous hit songs. It is a ballad with a chill and beautiful melody typical of Che’Nelle, and with lyrics that preach the importance of self-acceptance.

With the lyrics “I am all I want” and “I am all I need,” the chorus teaches the importance of affirming and accepting yourself as you are. Che’Nelle hopes that listeners will feel the same way after listening to her lyrics. She tells her listeners, “Even if you have a day when things don’t go well, as long as you know your own self-worth, you can handle anything.”

The first pressing of the CD includes a bonus message card from Che’Nelle to remind you to love yourself, reflecting the song’s theme.
