Daniel Padilla under fire for allegedly ‘mocking Koreans’ during the 2023 Asia Artist Awards

Daniel Padilla’s recently announced breakup and the rumors surrounding it isn’t the only thing making his name go around on social media recently.

On December 14, 2023, well-known Filipino celebs, K-Pop idols, Korean actors/actresses, and other Asian artists gathered in the Philippine Arena in Bulacan for the 2023 Asia Artist Awards.

The most-awarded group of the night was girl group NewJeans, bagging 2 Daesang awards (Singer of the Year, Song of the Year for “Ditto”), the Asia Celebrity – Music award, Fabulous Award – Music award, the Best Choice Award in Music, and the Hot Trend award in Music.

One of the most anticipated attendees was Filipino celebrity Daniel Padilla, who had appeared in several movies and teleseryes since his debut in the industry. He and Kathryn Bernardo were awarded in the show with the Fabulous Award – Television award, much to the joy of fans.

However, Daniel Padilla’s acceptance speech drew mixed reactions and accusations of being disrespectful towards Koreans.

He initially began his speech in Filipino, before greeting the Korean attendees by saying “Annyeong” and laughing away from the mic. This caused some problems in the eyes of the viewers and netizens, especially with his use of the informal Korean greeting.

Netizens later on said that he should have researched how to correctly greet in Korean before the show. Others compared his speech to his ex, Kathryn Bernardo.

At the same time, others thought of the issue differently. They said that Daniel may have felt nervous at the time and that there were double standards at play with how many have been reacting towards this.

Others also cited that his recent break-up with Kathryn Bernardo, and the (now confirmed) rumors of his cheating may have fueled this sort of reaction from many.

Apart from the mixed reactions to his speech, Daniel Padilla’s photo at the 2023 AAA Artists’ wall was graffitied and the actor himself was booed at the show.

The actor has yet to respond to the reactions he had gotten from the 2023 Asia Artist Awards. Padilla had also changed his break-up message on Instagram from the long and poetry-filled one (that drew in giggles from many for seemingly formed from ChatGPT), to a short and sweet one, “ikaw at ako.”
