Italy’s State Property Agency has announced it will be giving away a total of 103 unused or abandoned historic castles, defense towers, rural farmhouses, and monasteries to anyone willing to develop these properties into cool tourist destinations like hotels, restaurants, or spas.
This is part of a major effort to encourage tourists to explore Italy and go beyond the overcrowded visitor destinations. The buildings — including the land — will be 100% free. The only caveat is that the lucky recipients must commit to renovate or restore the property given them (they are mostly in a state of disrepair) and turn it into something that will entice people to the area.
Oldies need not apply, though. The group is looking for applicants under 40 to send in a thorough outline of what they intend to do with the property and how they will turn it into a functioning heritage site for tourists. If your proposal is chosen, you’ll be given property rights for nine years, with the option to renew it for another nine after that.
You have until June 26 to send in your applications, so better put your life on hold starting today and devote all your time and energy in creating the most epic proposal you’ve ever made in your life. It’s a free castle after all! In frikkin’ Italy!
You can fill out the application form right HERE. You might be needing Google Translate’s help though.
