‘BLACKPINK at 7’: A look back at the phenomenal group’s career milestones

South Korean girl group BLACKPINK just celebrated its 7th debut anniversary and has been dominating since seven years ago, from topping the music chart to having solo endeavors to collecting accolades, here are some of the milestones the group achieved over the span of their career.

The group consisting of members Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, debuted with the single album Square One featuring the songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah” on August 8, 2016, under South Korean agency YG Entertainment.

Both “Whistle” and “Boombayah” charted number two and one, respectively, on the ‘Billboard World Digital Song Sales’ chart, with “Whistle” achieving a ‘Perfect All-Kill,’ wherein, the song topped every major real-time and daily music chart in South Korea, as well as the weekly and real-time cumulative score of iChart.

BLACKPINK also got their first music show win in South Korea after only 13 days after their debut, being the fastest girl group to have a music show win after their debut at the time, further solidifying their group as “monster rookies,” and has been a staple name in the industry ever since making historical achievements.

Jennie’s Solo Debut (November 2018)

Jennie was the first member of the group to make her solo debut – her single “SOLO” not only topped the Gaon Digital Chart – where she won the ‘Song Of The Year’ for the month of November – but also topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. The song also won the ‘Best Digital Song’ category at the Golden Disc Awards in 2020.

First Female K-Pop Group to Perform at Coachella (April 2019)

This group has a lot of “firsts” but among their most memorable is their first performance at Coachella 20th anniversary, where they became the first-ever female K-pop group to perform at the festival.

First K-Pop Girl Group to be Recognized by RIAA (August 2019)

BLACKPINK’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was definitely a banger, even the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) had to certify it gold, making the group the first female K-pop to be certified by the organization.

First K-Pop Group Video to Surpass 1 Billion YouTube Views (November 2019)

Speaking of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” did you know that it was the first music video by a K-pop group that reached 1 billion views on YouTube? As of writing, “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” is the second most viewed music video by a Korean act, followed by their 2019 hit song “Kill This Love.”

First Female K-Pop Group to Win an MTV VMA (August 2020)

Not like it’s surprising, but, “How You Like That” won the ‘Song of the Summer’ category of the MTV Video Music Award, making them the first female K-pop group to win a VMA.

Most Subscribed Artist on YouTube (September 2020)

As of September 2020, BLACKPINK bumped off Justin Bieber to become the most subscribed artist on YouTube – as of writing, they’re the number 11th most-subscribed channel on the platform with over 90.4 million subscribers.

Rosé’s Solo Debut (March 2021)

Everything we need is written by Rosé. Her debut songs “On the Ground” and “Gone” takes us on a journey of her making – the song “On the Ground” became the highest charting song by a Korean female soloist on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Lisa’s Solo Debut (September 2021)

Everyone silent ~ and make way for Lalisa! Lisa is loud and proud with her debut single album Lalisa – wherein, the lead track “Lalisa” won the ‘Best K-Pop’ award at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

Jisoo’s Lead Role Debut (February 2022)

Though this is not technically Jisoo’s first acting gig, Disney+’s limited series “Snowdrop,” alongside Jung Hae-in, is her first lead role – which received a lot of love from its audience.

BLACKPINK’s sophomore full-length album “Born Pink” just raised the flag for girl groups, becoming the first female K-pop group to top Billboard 200 and the first female group since 2008 to do so.

First Asian Act to Headline Coachella (April 2023)

From the small stage to the main stage, BLACKPINK became the first Asian act to headline the music event.

Jisoo’s Solo Debut (March 2023)

Jisoo has bloomed ~ the most-anticipated solo debut of the last member of BLACKPINK to have a solo debut has finally come – and it’s oh-so-good! Jisoo released her single album Me, with the lead track “FLOWER” and the B-side “All Eyes On Me.”

Jennie’s Acting Debut (June 2023)

To wrap up this list is Jennie with her acting debut and she’s straight to Hollywood! Jennie played a role in HBO’s “The Idol,” starring alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan, and The Weekend.
