Barbie’s writer and director Greta Gerwig admitted that during the earlier production process of the film, she shut down potential CGI effects that were almost placed onto the cast’s feet.
Two weeks prior to its most-anticipated premiere (and cinema battle with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer) in theaters, Gerwig said in an interview with Australia’s The Project that adding CGI effects ‘would be a nightmare’ for the film.
“There was a big discussion in the beginning,” said Gerwig. “Everyone said, ‘Are you going to CGI all the feet?’ And I thought, ‘Oh god, no! That’s terrifying! That’s a nightmare.’ Also Margot [Robbie] has the nicest feet. She has these beautiful dancer feet. She should just hang on to that bar and do it just like this.”
It can be recalled in the trailer that there’s a scene wherein Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) stepped out of her high-heeled slippers – revealing still-arched feet similar to the doll when changing footwear. Additionally, Robbie did not use a ‘feet double’ for that scene.
“The shot took eight takes. [Margot Robbie] had to hold onto a bar to keep her feet flexed. And, yes, those are her feet. ‘I really don’t like it when someone else does my hands or feet in an insert shot,’ said Gerwig in a TIME interview.
Gerwig assured that some of the cast in this film did arch feet, capturing her own experience with a Barbie doll.
“Even though it’s this huge movie, it feels very personal to me,” Gerwig added. “It was made by so many people who cared about it. Even the Barbie logo that we used is the logo that I had as a child of the ’80s. I would stand in the toy store…we had the wide boxes because their hair was really big. I wanted the [logo] that I liked.”
“Barbie” opens in Philippine theaters on July 19 – two days prior to the U.S. premiere.
